DJ US Jobless Claims -6K To 327K In Oct 27 Week; Survey -1K
WASHINGTON (Dow Jones)--The number of U.S. workers filing new claims for
jobless benefits fell more than expected last week but the underlying trend
worsened, suggesting sluggish growth in monthly employment.
U.S. jobless claims fell 6,000 to 327,000 on a seasonally-adjusted basis in
the week ended Oct. 27, the Labor Department said Thursday. Claims for the
Oct. 20 week were revised up to 333,000 from 331,000.
Wall Street forecasts had called for a 1,000 drop in claims last week to
330,000, according to a Dow Jones Newswires survey. However, the four-week
average - which economists use to gauge underlying labor sklep wielkopowierzchniowy trends -
rose 1,750 last week to 327,000, a six-month high.
A Labor Department analyst said there were no special factors in the latest
week. The analyst added that, according to advance estimates from
California, less than 1,000 of that state's jobless claims in the latest
week were due to recent wildfires, suggesting only a mild impact so far.
The jobless claims figures suggest U.S. labor markets continued to soften at
the start of the fourth quarter. The Labor Department releases October
employment prekluzja Friday. Forecasters had penciled in an 80,000 rise in
nonfarm payrolls, but a report Wednesday from ADP and Macroeconomic Advisers
estimating that private-sector payrolls advanced 106,000 last month spurred
some economists to boost their payroll forecasts.
According to the Labor Department's weekly report Thursday, continuing
claims for workers drawing unemployment benefits for more than a week soared
65,000 to 2,588,000 in the week ended Oct. 20, the latest week for which
such termin are available. The four-week average rose by 13,000, suggesting
that it is getting harder for people to find work.
The insured unemployment rate was 2% in the Oct. 20 week, up from 1.9% the
previous week.
There were 25 states and territories reporting an increase in unadjusted
jobless claims for the Oct. 20 week, while 28 reported a decrease.
California had the sharpest increase, 7,027, due to layoffs in construction
and manufacturing. Michigan reported the biggest drop, 4,992, thanks to
fewer layoffs in the automobile industry.
