1217 GMT EUROPEAN SUMMARY: Wednesday was always going to be
about interest rates after Tuesday's US consumer confidence report, at a two
year low, seemed to cement the Fed will cut by at least 25bp to 4.50%
tonight.
EUR/USD made another fresh all-time high of 1.4470 after German retail sales
came in at a stonking 2.3% against 0.8% forecast and although it slipped on
profit taking the 2.6% year-on-year flash EMU HICP print against 2.3% seen,
a nightmare for the ECB's 2% target, helped it back towards the highs. BoJ
held rates at 0.50% however BoJ downgrades to CPI, GDP and a dovish tone
from governor Fukui propelled USD/JPY above 115.00 on the prospect of
domestic rates being left on hold into '08. Sterling strength carried on
from Tuesday after MPC member Barker's comments suggested no near-term UK
rate cut. Cable printed a fresh 26-year high of 2.0742 helped by a
surprisingly strong 1.1% month-on-month rise in the Nationwide house price
survey. Fixed income had difficult session, US outperformed Europe on the
diverging interest rate outlook, Dec bunds are off 0.37 to 113.43, Dec gilts
-0.40 to 107.30. The main European equity markets played it safe trading
just above par by midday.
